This collaborative project developed within Hyperbody Studio aimed on reuse of a vacant office buildings in Netherlands for purpose of flexible housing using non-standard architecture approach and principles. The final functional 1:1 prototype, was created using parametrically aided digital manufacturing techniques and CAD-CAM technologies.
The goal is to have the comfort and functionality of a 100m2 apartment in a 50m2 space. Normally Houses have different locations for different activities. We aim to use the same location for different activities by creating them only when they’re being used.
We need the ability to make furnished spaces and the boundary that surrounds those spaces appear and disappear at will. We have therefore designed a moving wall that can go anywhere and from which furniture can appear when desired. The component cannot account for every activity in the household and is therefore augmented with three non-moving units. These then contain elements that would not fit, or would not be used in moving wall component. Combining the static and the moving units results in a dynamic floorplan that can be anything user wants it to be.
The user can choose an activity through a smartphone application. The system then evaluates what other activities are being performed at the moment and provides several options for location, shape and privacy of the activity. The user chooses and the space is created.
